"How long will my car be in the shop?" is one of the first questions we hear from Tri-Valley drivers booking window tint. The honest answer has two parts: the installation itself, and the curing time afterward, when the film finishes bonding to the glass. Here's what to expect for both.
How long does the installation take?
For most vehicles, a professional tint installation takes a few hours, not a full day. The main factors are:
- Number of windows. Tinting just the two front windows to match the factory rear glass is much quicker than a full vehicle.
- Vehicle shape. Coupes and sedans with simple glass are usually faster. SUVs, minivans, and cars with steeply curved rear windows take longer because the film has to be heat-shrunk to fit the curve.
- Old tint removal. If faded, purple, or bubbling film has to come off first, plan on extra time. Removing old adhesive cleanly is slow, careful work.
- Windshield strips and full windshields. Adding a sun strip or a clear heat-rejecting windshield film adds time to the appointment.
When you request a quote, we'll give you a time estimate for your exact year, make, and model so you can plan your day around it.
Does the type of film change the timeline?
Not much. Whether you choose our entry-level Encore Supreme IR, the premium-value XenithIR ceramic, or top-tier 3M Crystalline, installation steps are similar: clean the glass, cut and shape the film, apply it, and squeegee out the water. What changes between films is heat rejection, clarity, and price — not how long you wait.
How long does window tint take to cure?
This is the part most people don't expect. Tint is installed with a mounting solution, and a small amount of moisture stays trapped between the film and the glass for a while. Curing is the time it takes that moisture to evaporate so the adhesive bonds completely.
Curing commonly takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the film, the thickness, and the weather. Film manufacturers publish their own guidance, and we'll give you the aftercare instructions for the film you choose.
How Dublin weather affects curing
Tri-Valley weather is actually friendly to curing for much of the year. Warm, sunny afternoons help moisture evaporate faster. In the cooler, damper months — or if your car spends most of its time in a shaded garage — curing tends to take longer. Parking in the sun when you can is an easy way to help it along.
Aftercare: what to do (and avoid) while tint cures
Keep the windows rolled up. This is the big one. Rolling a window down too soon can catch the bottom edge of the film and peel it. Follow the waiting period we give you at pickup — a few days is typical.
Don't clean the inside of the glass yet. Wait before wiping the tinted side. When you do clean it, use a soft microfiber cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner.
Washing the outside is fine. The film is on the inside of the glass, so normal exterior washing doesn't touch it. Just avoid aiming a pressure washer at the window edges early on.
Leave the rear defroster alone for a few days. Give the film time to bond over the defroster lines.
What's normal during curing — and what isn't
Normal:
- Slight haziness or a cloudy look
- Small water pockets or tiny "bubbles" that shrink and disappear over days or weeks
These are moisture still evaporating. Don't press on them or try to push them out — they go away on their own.
Not normal:
- Bubbles that remain after the full cure period
- Edges lifting or peeling
- Dust, hair, or debris trapped under the film
- Creases or scratches in the film
If you notice any of these after curing, call us and we'll take a look.
Planning your appointment
A simple plan for most customers:
- Request a quote with your vehicle details and the film you're interested in.
- Drop the car off at our Dublin shop at 6355 Scarlett Ct. Suite 8 — we're open Monday–Friday 7am–5pm and Saturday 7am–12pm.
- Pick it up the same visit, then keep the windows up for the recommended period.
Full-car ceramic tint starts at $365, and the final price depends on your vehicle and film choice. Learn more on our car window tinting in Dublin, CA page, or call (925) 492-7272 for your exact quote.
