The windshield is the biggest piece of glass on your car. It lets in the most sun and heat. That makes "can I tint my front windshield?" one of the most common questions we get from Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, and San Ramon drivers. The short answer: you can't put dark tint on it in California, but you do have legal-minded options.

What California law says about windshields

California Vehicle Code Section 26708 is strict about the windshield because the driver needs a clear view:

  • Top strip only for tint: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield, often called a visor strip or "eyebrow."
  • No dark film below that line. A dark shade like 35% or 20% on the full windshield is not legal for street driving.
  • Clear, light films are treated differently. The law makes room for clear, colorless, UV-rejecting material on the windshield and front side windows when it meets visibility requirements.

Laws change and every vehicle's factory glass is a little different. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. Ask us to walk you through what applies to your car.

Option 1: The 4-inch visor strip

The strip runs across the top of the windshield. It cuts glare when the sun sits low, which you'll notice driving west on I-580 in the evening or east on the morning commute. It's quick to install and stays within the top-4-inch rule.

Option 2: Light 70% or 80% windshield film

If heat is your main complaint, a very light ceramic film over the whole windshield can help. We offer 70% and 80% shades. They are designed to look nearly clear while blocking UV and rejecting heat.

One thing to know: your factory windshield already blocks some light on its own. Any film you add lowers the total a little more. That's why we help you choose the right shade for your car instead of just applying the darkest one allowed.

Why bother with a windshield film?

  • Less heat on your dashboard, steering wheel, and arms, especially on a Tri-Valley summer afternoon.
  • UV protection for your skin and your interior.
  • Less glare without making the view darker at night.

Windshield tint vs. windshield protection film

These are two different products. Windshield tint is about heat, glare, and UV. Windshield protection film is a clear film that helps resist rock chips and pitting from freeway debris. If chips are your concern, see our windshield protection film page.

Pair it with the rest of your windows

Most customers do the windshield with a full-car ceramic tint so the whole cabin stays cooler. Our window tinting page covers our ceramic films and legal shades for the front side windows.
