What Is ADAS Calibration? Static vs Dynamic Calibration Explained

What ADAS calibration is, how static and dynamic calibration differ, and when your car needs it after windshield replacement — from a Dublin, CA shop that does both.

Most newer cars have a camera mounted behind the windshield. It powers features like lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Together these are called ADAS: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. When the windshield is replaced or the camera is moved, those systems need to be calibrated so they see the road correctly.

What is ADAS calibration?

Calibration is the process of re-aiming and re-teaching your car's cameras and sensors so they measure distance and lane position accurately. Even a tiny change in camera angle can mean the system reads a lane line or the car ahead slightly off. That's a big deal for a feature that's supposed to brake for you.

Static calibration

Static calibration is done in the shop with the car parked:

  • The vehicle is set up on a level floor at precise distances.
  • Manufacturer-specific targets are positioned in front of the camera.
  • A scan tool tells the car's computer to aim itself at the targets.

It needs space, a controlled setup, and the right targets for each make.

Dynamic calibration

Dynamic calibration is done on the road:

  • A scan tool puts the system into calibration mode.
  • The car is driven at specified speeds on roads with clear lane markings.
  • The camera learns its position from real lane lines and traffic.

It depends on good road and weather conditions.

Static vs dynamic: which does my car need?

It isn't a matter of preference. Your vehicle's manufacturer decides. Some cars require static, some dynamic, and many require both in sequence. A proper calibration follows the manufacturer's procedure for your exact make, model, and equipment.

When do you need ADAS calibration?

  • After windshield replacement on a camera-equipped vehicle.
  • After a wheel alignment or suspension work, on many models.
  • After a collision or bumper repair involving sensors.
  • When a warning light shows a camera or lane-assist fault.
