Damage larger than a quarter, a crack that is spreading, or damage that compromises the edge or critical viewing area will generally require replacement. A photograph is helpful, but a technician must still inspect the glass before confirming repairability.

Protect a fresh chip before your appointment
Keep the area as clean and dry as practical. Do not apply household glue, clear nail polish, or other do-it-yourself fillers. They can contaminate the break and prevent repair resin from bonding correctly.
Avoid blasting the windshield with hot defrost or very cold air. Park in shade when possible and close doors gently. These steps cannot guarantee the chip will stay small, but they reduce unnecessary stress on already damaged glass.
