A smashed door window or shattered back glass is stressful — and the first question is almost always, "How much is this going to cost?" The honest answer is that it depends on which window broke and what vehicle you drive. Here's what changes the price, so you know what to ask when you call a Dublin auto glass shop.

Which window is it?

Cars have more glass than most people realize, and each piece is priced differently.

Door glass (front or rear side windows)

The windows that roll up and down. They're usually tempered glass, which shatters into small pieces when broken — common after a break-in. Replacement includes removing the door panel, vacuuming out the broken glass, installing the new glass, and checking that the window motor and track work smoothly.

Quarter glass

The small fixed window behind the rear door, or sometimes in front of the front door. Some are a simple piece of glass; others are bonded in with urethane or built into a molded frame, which takes more work.

Vent glass

A small triangular window, usually in the front or rear door. Vent glass is often sold as part of the door glass assembly or with its own seal, so the part can cost more than you'd expect for its size.

Back glass (rear windshield)

The rear window usually includes defroster lines, and on many vehicles a radio antenna, a wiper, or a third brake light. Learn more in our guide to rear windshield replacement.

What affects the price

  1. Year, make, and model. Common sedans usually have easier-to-find parts than luxury, electric, or newer models.
  2. Glass features. Privacy tint, acoustic layers, heating elements, antennas, and rain sensors all change the part.
  3. How the glass is installed. Glass in a door track is a different job from glass bonded to the body.
  4. Cleanup. Tempered glass ends up inside the door, on the seats, and in the carpet. A proper job includes cleaning it out.
  5. Damaged hardware. A break-in can also damage the window regulator, motor, or seals.
  6. Window tint. If the old window was tinted, the new glass will be clear unless it's tinted again. We can tint the new window to match.

Because of all these variables, we don't post one flat price online — we quote your exact vehicle, so the number you hear is the number you pay.

Will insurance cover it?

Many comprehensive policies cover broken glass, including damage from a break-in, minus your deductible. If the deductible is close to the cost of the repair, paying directly is often simpler. Our auto glass insurance claims page explains how the process works, and this guide covers common questions.

What to do right after a window breaks

  • Take photos for your insurance and, after a break-in, a police report.
  • Cover the opening with plastic and tape so rain and dust stay out — avoid taping over painted surfaces for long.
  • Don't drive with loose glass in the door or on the seats.
  • Call for a quote with your year, make, model, and which window broke.

Is it windshield damage instead?

A chip or crack in the windshield is a different job. Small chips can often be repaired — see chip repair — while larger cracks need windshield replacement, and many newer vehicles also need windshield calibration afterward.
